A organização dessas populações de índios convertidos ao cristianismo foi inspirada pelas cidades ideais dos filósofos do século XVI. O estilo dos edifícios é o resultado da fusão da arquitetura católica com as tradições locais. As seis cidades de San Francisco Javier, Concepción, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael e San José, localizadas no antigo território dos índios Chiquito, são ainda hoje um patrimônio vivo.
